According to the industry trade body, 1.5 million customers switched energy suppliers in the first six months of this year, with roughly 600 switching to smaller suppliers.
There has been a “steady long term increase” in the number of people moving to small suppliers, with 112,348 last month compared to just 36,876 in June 2013.
Angela Knight, Chief executive of Energy UK said: “It is good to see customers are continuing to take advantage of the choices available to them… There is a lot of choice out there and customers can save money by switching so it’s heartening to see that consumers are grabbing these opportunities.”
Ofgem approved new plans last month to allow new customers to switch energy suppliers within three days compared to the current five weeks. These changes are due to start at the end of this year.
