UK Energy Minister Greg Barker has announced that 38 communities in the UK will benefit from a share in £3 million for installation of renewable heating.

This latest award was launched last summer to start new projects and support existing renewable heating schemes and forms part of the Renewable Heat Premium Payment communities scheme. It will help around 1250 homes install technologies like solar water heating, heat pumps and biomass boilers.

“We need to transform the way we heat our homes to help keep bills down and cut carbon too,” Barker said in a statement. “Community groups, with their enthusiasm, local knowledge and drive, need to be at the very heart of this revolution.”

The Energy Saving Trust has been working with the Department of Energy and Climate Change on the project, inviting community-based organisations like co-ops, voluntary groups and development trusts to apply for funding.

The successful groups from across England, Scotland and Wales have until the end of March next year to complete the majority of the work supported by the funds.
