Giant in engineering ABB has won an order of $30 million (£18m) to supply high-voltage cable to an offshore windfarm in the UK.

It will design and commission the 25-kilometre submarine cable and related offshore substation cable that will transmit power from DONG Energy’s Burbo Bank Extension wind farm.

The wind farm will have an estimated generating capacity of 258MW, which is enough to power 240,000 households.

The Burbo Bank wind farm – located on the Bubo Flats in Liverpool Bay – currently includes 25 wind turbines and can generate up to 90MW of clean electricity.

Claudio Facchin, Head of ABB’s Power Systems Division said: “Offshore wind is making an increasing contribution to boost the share of renewables in Europe’s energy mix and this project will support the UK government’s efforts in this area.”
