DONG Energy, Denmark’s largest energy company is taking over the development rights from RES Americas for an offshore wind project in the US.
The project cold potentially provide more than 1GW of energy in Massachusetts, with the firm believing it has good development potential as the seabed and wind conditions are similar to that of the North West of Europe.
RES Americas won one of the two leases in January at an auction held by the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM). RES Americas will still support the development of the farm.
DONG Energy’s Executive Vice President Samuel Leupold said: “The US is an interesting new market for offshore wind with the potential to become a significant area for future development.
“We have constructed around one third of the offshore wind capacity in the world and we are looking forward to bringing our skills and experience to this new market.”
DONG Energy are currently building another 1,300 MW of offshore wind projects in Germany and the UK, with an aim to build a total of 6,500 MW by 2020.
