Energy minister John Hayes has said that he will consider making a statement about the short-term future of coal.
Shadow Energy minister Tom Greatrex urged Hayes to show investors in the UK coal industry and clean coal of it’s role in the future of the energy mix.
The Carbon Capture and Storage Association (CCSA) are also urging the government to develop a “fossil fuel strategy” that will outline the future for coal-fired plant and to help the transition to clean coal.
A spokesperson for the CCSA said that in the CCS competition run by the government, three-quarters of the projects are coal-fired which shows the need for a clear coal future to be planned out.
“For the UK no to have any idea where coal is going and coal CCS makes no sense,” the spokesperson added. “The need for coal in the UK and CCS is unequivocal and the government needs to think about coal.”
