We must not neglect water efficiency in energy saving initiatives, say the Energy Saving Trust and Waterwise.
Domestic water use accounts for 23% of heating bills, amounting to around £160 a year on the average energy bill.
The two organisations are launching new guidance to help water companies and providers of the Green Deal home efficiency scheme and Energy Company Obligation (ECO), which requires suppliers to help their customers cut energy use, help householders improve their water efficiency.
Simple advice on water efficiency measures are given in the guidance, that providers can integrate into energy efficiency retrofit offerings, and increasing consumer engagement with water use issues.
“There is a great opportunity for Green Deal and ECO schemes to include assistance from the local water company and make water efficiency a prominent part of their Green Deal offering,” says Andrew Tucker of the Energy Saving Trust.
