The European Commission wants to make marine data public and is consulting how sea bed surveys could be used to obtain development licences by offshore wind companies. This could also be used to create a digital seabed map of European waters by 2020.
According to the Commission , there is no need to keep the information private once the offshore developers have completed their survey works and the licences have been granted to build the wind farms.
The consultation which runs until December, asks if private firms should obligated to provide their data, and says that shared data could reduce the collective bill for building offshore, and the power grids needed to connect them.
