The German energy provider RheinEnergie, has achieved a major milestone in making Cologne a “smart city” by installing smart meters in approximately 30,000 households.

The smart meters have been installed in 350 of the larger apartment buildings in Cologne. They record gas, electricity and water data and have been specially designed for RheinEnergie. SAP® AMI Integration for Utilities software helps to ensure a reliable networking of technical and commercial processes. As a result of this RheinEnergie can now react better to it’s customers needs and offer special services and rates.

“This innovative flagship project for the German market impressively shows how intelligent meter technology can optimize business processes, and highlights the crucial role played by a ‘smart’ customer information system,” said Thomas Breuer, executive board member of RheinEnergie.
