Hitachi’s plan for six nuclear reactors in the UK has taken a step forward as they ask the Nuclear Regulation and Environment Agency to assess the designs.
Last year Hitachi bought Horizon Nuclear Power, with intentions to build generators at Wylfa, Anglesey and Oldbury in Gloucestershire. There will be tests performed on the advanced boiling water reactors at both sites.
Energy minister John Hayes said: “New nuclear has a central role to play in our energy future, delivering secure, low carbon power and supporting jobs and economic growth. Hitachi’s commitment to the UK is extremely welcome, and I am determined that we work closely with the company to deliver their planned investment.”
