The UK’s SSWG ( Smart Specification Working Group) has demonstrated the capability of smart metering devices from leading manufacturers using the groups set of open specifications to work together in a HAN ( Home Area Network.

The specifications are based on the ZigBee platform, supporting communication and networking between core HAN components. These include communications hubs, smart meters, head end systems and in-home devices.

The group was established in 2010 as a non-profit organisation, whose purpose was to create an open and inclusive set of interface specifications to support the UK’s smart meter deployment.

“Our aim is to work closely with DECC’s program and de-risk, optimize and accelerate smart metering rollouts,” commented SSWG spokesperson and MD of Elster Electricity UK, Richard St Clair. “We have established a HAN protocol that works with products and solutions that are available in the marketplace today, and are making great strides forward with smart metering.”

The companies participating are  Elster, Green Energy Options (GEO), Huawei, Itron, Landis+Gyr, Onzo, Secure Meters and Trilliant.

By the middle of this year, SSWG are expected to have completed their work on the WAN and pre-pay specifications, which they are currently working on.
