The Home Heat Helpline surveyed householders who were likely to be eligible for assistance with their bills. 49% of those surveyed were aware they qualified for grants, discounts and rebate schemes, whilst 32% were unsure. The remaining people were under the impression they didn’t qualify.
An estimated 3.4 million are said to be eligible for assistance according to Home Heat Helpline.
The study found that only 38 per cent of the people quizzed had ever enquired whether help was available. Numbers who had enquired about eligibility varied regionally around 40 per cent, but only 9 per cent in Northern Ireland had checked.
The research was carried out by New Policy Institute and Censuswide on behalf of Home Heat Helpline last October.
