A new meter is being rolled out by British Gas into customers homes, described as ” the most advanced smart meter in the word”.
Landis+Gyr developed the new meter, which comes with a touch screen display that shows households how much energy they are using. The management software and communications hub were developed by Trilliant.
Over 400,000 smart meters have been rolled out by British Gas so far, the largest number by any British supplier, however some of the existing smart meters will need to be replaced as they don’t comply with government’s national specifications.
“We want people to understand the energy they use and make informed choices about when to use it and how to save it,” said Dean Keeling, managing director of British Gas Smart Homes. “These new smart meters will help customers do this.”
British Gas has submitted a request to Ofgem to increase the meter inspection period on the supply licence from 2 years to 5 years. This will not apply in the case of vulnerable customers where the 2 year inspection period will continue.
The change would increase the efficiency of meter inspection, removing a greater level of safety risk and maintain the current level of customer protection.
This is currently under consultation with Ofgem, who also proposes to take a wider of view of meter safety inspections obligations within smart metering.
