MP’s have been told that customers could incur charges if they wish to opt out of having smart meters installed.

Scottish Power’s operation’s director Andrew Ward gave evidence to the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee saying charging for meter reading and billing was an option that had reduced refusal rates in the USA from 8% to 1.5%.

When he was asked if this approach was preferred by him he said, “We are nowhere near that point yet”.

UK suppliers are expected under the smart meter roll out plan to achieve 97.5 per cent uptake of smart metering.
