Samsung’s prototype offshore wind turbine has been delivered to a test facility in the UK.
The turbine was delivered to Narec’s 15MW test facility in Northumberland. It showcases the technology that will be used in the Round three offshore wind zones.
Testing in the nacelle turbine is expected to start in the next couple of weeks and is sue to last for six months. Some of the harshest conditions will be simulated during this period, including 150 mph gusts of wind.
The nacelle turbine will be used to commission Narec’s 15MW test facility, which cost £47 million to develop, including a £25 million investment from the Energy Technologies Institute.
Andrew Mill, Narec’s chief executive, said: “It is fantastic to see the delivery of Samsung’s nacelle as it brings us closer to seeing the next-generation technology becoming a reality.”
