The Scottish government is ahead of it’s target of 500MW of energy to be produced by community or locally owned projects for it’s 2020 Routemap for Renewable Energy.

The latest figures reveal that (as of June 2012) more than 200MW of community owned renewable energy is being produced from more than 5,000 locally owned schemes.

This is a 39% increase on the year before and is made up of 80 MW of electrical projects and 117MW in heat capacity.Scottish energy minister, Fergus Ewing, said achieving the 500MW target would be worth £2.4 billion to communities and businesses during the lifetime of the energy projects.

He added that with more than 600 MW at different stages of development and planning, “the future for community and locally owned energy across Scotland looks brighter than ever”.
