IGas have found shale gas in the Barton Moss site near Manchester.
The drilling company has now finished at the site, which was recently the focus of some anti-fracking demonstrations.
IGas confirmed they had reached the Bowland Shale which is a stretch of porous rock deep under the ground, which contains the shale gas.
Some cores of rock were taken out of the ground from different levels so they can assess how much gas might be trapped in the rock.
Chief Executive Andrew Austin said: “These early exploration results are key to our understanding of the potential resource in the area. We are pleased that the drilling has completed on time and on budget.”
