The Carbon Trust advise businesses to switch off lights, turn down the thermostat and unplug the computers while the office is unoccupied through the holiday period.
Just turning all printers, fax machines, photocopiers and monitors off instead of leaving on stand-by can save £££’s through out the year. While offices are empty the thermostat should be turned down to a low level, just enough to prevent frost.
The less obvious money wasters such as kettles, fridges, coffee machines and microwaves should be unplugged to also save energy.
All this office equipment accounts for 15% of the electrical energy use per year, according to the Carbon Trust, and the prediction is that this will rise to 30% by 2020.
Costs are currently around £300 a year and rising, so every penny saved counts.
