Over 1600 LED lights have been installed on the M62 motorway near Huddersfield and Halifax and on the M621 near Leeds.
The LED lighting is said to be 53% more efficient, with an equivalent energy saving to powering 20,000 homes and 389,000 loads of washing, and will reduce carbon by 700 tonnes per year.
It also includes a remote monitoring system to allow contractors to remotely control the lights.
Specialist technology has been adapted for the use on motorways and A-roads.
Mark Ramsden, Highways England Service Delivery Team Leader for Yorkshire and Humber said: “This is a true example of taking innovation from another industry, modifying it for the highways sector and improving value by locking in safety, customer, cost efficiencies and environmental benefits.”
