Contracts of £26 million have been awarded by UKPN for grid maintenance and upgrades over the next two years.

Successful bidders for the contracts were Carillion, Costain and Electricity Network Solutions in the South East and Eastern England.

They will increase capacity and renew components on steel pylons, refurbishing and rebuilding 33,000 and 132,000 power lines.

Nirmal Kotecha, director of capital programme at UKPN, said: “We are delighted to be working with three contractors, including two new suppliers, which bring a depth and breadth of knowledge and experience to our business. Together, we will deliver essential improvements to our electricity networks to maintain reliable power supplies.”

The new investment framework currently going through the RIIO-ED1 price review process begins in April 2015, at which time the contracts end.
